SOED Successfully Organized the 1st Online “Ocean Star Open Course”


From 24 to 25 January, SOED hosted the 1st online “Ocean Star Open Course” in 2021. The course invites Prof. Erick Fredj from Department of Computer Science at the Jerusalem College of Technology to deliver series of lectures on “Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) in Ocean Flows: Computational Methods”.

During the course, Prof. Fredj integrated the theoretical knowledge into the application of software, and systematically introduced Energy dissipation routes in the ocean, local and nonlocal mixing and its consequences for deterministic prediction, the occurrence of Lagrangian coherence, inertial coherent structures, and their detection, transport by coherent vortices in the ocean, extraction of persistent transport patterns from large oceanic data sets, finite-size effects and the relevant applications of microplastic in the ocean, oil spill evolution prediction.


In the communication session especially designed in day two, Prof. Fredj answered the questions raised by the trainees, gave considerate suggestion and hosted warm discussions. 5 PhD candidates, including Ms. Dong Huizi from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Mr. Ji Fei from Second Institute of Oceanography delivered brief presentations about their researches.


The online open course attracts more than 80 post-graduates, PhD candidates and researchers from domestic and foreign universities and institutions, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Xiamen University, Ocean University of China, Fudan University, Institute of Oceanography, CAS, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, CAS and Second Institute of Oceanography, MNR. The trainees expressed their gratitude for the knowledge they acquired in the course, and they look forward to participating the fruitful open courses organized by SOED in the near future.
