Online Seminar Organized by SOED on Construction and Sharing of 4 Dimensional Ocean Observation Platform

2020-09-04

On 2 September, Online Seminar on Construction and Sharing of 4 Dimensional Ocean Observation Platform was successfully undertaken by State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics (SOED) and co-organized by Young Scientist Committee of SOED. The seminar invited 12 young scientists from foreign and domestic universities and scientific institutions such as Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, Ningbo University, East China Normal University, Sun Yat-sen University, The University of Waterloo (Canada), Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhejiang Ocean University, attracting numerous researchers and students from various institutions. Over 110 participates held online warm discussions on the theme of the seminar.

4 Dimensional Marine Observation Platform covers 3 dimensional marine space observation and the 4th dimension of time. The satellite remote sensing technology could observe parameters of ocean surface on large scale, while Argo could extend the vertical dimension, combining ship observation, anchor location and profiling floats to cover 3 dimensional observation of the objects. Meanwhile, Argo can integrate the previous observing data and the estimated data in the future through a timeline.

Associate Researcher WANG Yuntao and BAO Min, members of the Young Scientist Committee of SOED co-chaired the seminar and introduced the laboratory's progress in 4 dimensional marine observation and sharing of big data. Participants shared research achievements in the development of oceanic mobile observation platforms, three-dimensional monitoring network equipment, global salinity data sharing, three-dimensional laser remote sensing observation, ocean dynamic ecological processes analysis, primary production changes and organic matter observations, and research progress on Earth System Model. The successful seminar focused on the cutting-edged global development of 4 dimensional ocean observation and prediction, paid attention to major scientific and technical problems of natural resources, and built a platform for cooperation and sharing, which promoted the academic atmosphere of SOED and improved the comprehensive strength of the laboratory.
