SOED Ocean-Star Open Course Series (2019 Autumn Course)

Led by vital national needs for protecting maritime rights and interests and for disaster prevention and mitigation, and with the goals of improving technology and theory used for establishing three-dimensional marine environmental monitoring and prediction systems, State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics (SOED) carries out research on satellite marine environment dynamics.

SOED is creating a unique marine science and technology platform with distinctive international influence. To showcase the lab, SOED has set up a series of “Ocean-Star Open Courses,” which are open to Ph. D. candidates and young researchers nationwide by inviting internationally renowned scientists to teach. In 2019, Ocean Dynamics will be offered in autumn. Detailed information is available at the official website of SOED (

Prof. Hou Yijun

Dr. Hou Yijun is currently a researcher and Ph. D. adviser at the Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the lead scientist of ocean science at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and PI of the National Key R & D ProgramSpecial Projects of Marine Safety and Security.” He has been awarded the special government allowance of the State Council (1993). He served as a deputy director of the Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was a member of ocean technology panel of the National High-Tech R & D (“863 Program”) and a member of the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation panel. He was the chief scientist of several major research projects of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Hou has presided over 40 programs, including the National Key Research and Development Programs, National “863 Programs” and NSFC Key Projects. He has published more than 200 papers, among which over 80 are SCI papers. His research on nonlinear wave statistics theory has been introduced into the graduate textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education.

Course Title: Ocean Dynamics

Language: Chinese  Time: 28th Oct. – 1st Nov., 2019

Qualification to attend: Master students, Ph.D. candidates, or researchers

Introduction: Ocean dynamics is an important foundation course of physical oceanography, whose position in oceanography is equivalent to advanced mathematics in mathematics. The textbook was written while Dr. Hou served as the chief lecturer at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). This course is the second part, while the first part was given in spring. After reviewing the spring course, Dr. Hou will focus on the ocean circulation theory, including basic concepts of ocean circulation, physical model of turbulent mixing, the planetary boundary theory (the Ekman theory, etc.), barotrophic ocean circulation theory (Sverdrup theory, western boundary theory, and so on), baroclinic ocean circulation theory and conservation laws in the ocean circulation.
