Science On a Sphere (SOS)——Passing on the Dream of the Ocean
To spread the knowledge of the ocean and carry forward the spirit of marine sciences, activities of marine sciences were in full swing on June 18th. More than 170 parents and students from Baochu Pagoda Experimental School, Wenyi Road Primary School and nearby communities participated.
Volunteers of SOED show animated images of atmospheric storms, climate change and ocean temperature on the Science On a Sphere (SOS), which is used to explain complex environmental processes in a way that is simultaneously intuitive and captivating.
SOS is a room-sized, global display system that uses computers and video projectors to map planetary data onto a six-foot diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. SOS was developed as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth System sciences to people of all ages.
SOED uses this platform to carry out a variety of public science activities, to help more people understand the ocean, care about the ocean and protect the ocean.
